Full Moon, 1st/2nd December 2009
Om Drām Dattātreyāya Namah
Blessed and Adorable Self,
A special full moon bestows its nectar on our earthly lives this 1st or 2nd December 2009. The peak full moon is at 23:30 Pacific time on Tuesday, 1st December in the USA and at 13:00 hours on Wednesday, 2nd December in India. Seekers and meditators yearning to soak in the lunar energy can plan accordingly.
As you might know, the moon traverses 27 (+1) lunar mansions during a sidereal lunar month (27.32 days); whereas one synodic lunar month is the time it takes the moon to go from one new moon to the next (29.53 days). Thus an average lunar month is considered to be 28 days. Each of these lunar mansions has specific Sanskrit names known as Naxatra. Therefore, a person born in a specific Naxatra is traditionally identified with a birth star based on the name of a particular lunar mansion.
This full moon with its 12 degree transit centered opposite the Sun falls almost exclusively on Rohini Naxatra in the constellation of Taurus. This is heralded as an exalted position of the moon as per the Jyotisha or the Vedic science of light and heavenly bodies. Moreover, at the exact time of peak full moon (when the moon is directly opposite of the Sun and is maximal), it will also be vargottama, which according to Jyotisha calculation implies an even more superior strength of the moon.
This combination of exalted and superior strength while being posited in Rohini Naxatra is indeed a unique situation. Furthermore, the birth star of Self Enquiry Life Fellowship as well as my own monastic star is Rohini Naxatra! Well-wishers, friends and initiates of the Swamahiman covenant are welcome to participate in this unique event through contemplative walks under the evening full moon light and through deeper meditation within about a 22 hour period centered on the peak full moon time at your own latitude and longitude (information easily accessible on the web).
On this special occasion of lunar synergy, I beckon you to meditate and imbibe the lunar nectar in order to regain purity of mind by cultivating coolness and calmness.
With my abounding holy blessings,
Swami Vidyadhishananda
